Sheffield United Women vs Durham Women 02/02/25

Match Report

Sheffield United 1 - 1 Durham

Durham made the 236 mile round trip from Maiden Castle to Bramall Lane on February 2nd for a pivotal Women’s Championship encounter. Desperate for three points to close the gap on leaders Birmingham, Durham knew that every match was a must-win in the tightly contested race for the top spot, where just a few points separate the top five teams.

Durham started off very strong in the first 20 minutes of the game, with them pressing high on Sheffield’s defensive back line. Despite their early pressure, they struggled to convert these opportunities into goals. Durham were awarded a corner kick in the 24th minute, which was then curled into the back of the net. Michaela Foster was the goal scorer to get Durham on the scoresheet at Bramall Lane, scoring directly from the corner.

The remainder of the first half saw Durham continue their dominance, though they failed to extend their lead. Half-time rolled around, with Durham having a 1-0 advantage. They were looking like the stronger side, but only had one goal to show for their efforts.

Sheffield United, determined to claw their way back, found an equaliser within the first 20 minutes of the second half, with Jacqui Hand finding the back of the net. The momentum shifted as Sheffield United pressed to go to get a second goal. However, a combination of saves from Ryle Foster, and some fantastic defending from Durham’s strong defensive line kept Sheffield United out.

Durham made three substitutions in the second half: Kaila Novak replaced Hannah Blake in the 68th minute, Carly Johns came on for goal-scorer Michaela Foster in the 78th minute, and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle substituted Ella Wilson as the game entered stoppage time. Sheffield United also utilised their substitutes effectively, bolstering their defence in the closing minutes to secure a point.

Despite Durham's relentless pursuit of a winning goal, their attacking efforts were broken down by the overloaded Sheffield United defence.

The final whistle blew with both teams sharing the points, leaving Durham to rue their missed chances as they continue to chase the Championship leaders.
